Small Group Tutoring at Learning Links

Learning Links offers online group tutoring for students who need a little extra support with their learning. Our small groups – capped at just four students – mean your child gets the focused attention and targeted support they need, while enjoying the benefits of peer learning.

Weekly sessions run for 60 minutes during the school term, with breaks over the school holidays. The program is carefully structured based on your child’s stage of schooling and learning goals, so they can build skills at a pace that’s right for them.

Our qualified teachers are skilled in designing and delivering effective online tutoring sessions. They use a range of interactive tools and digital resources to keep your child motivated and on track with their learning, all from the comfort of home.

Online group tutoring connects your child with others facing similar challenges with literacy, numeracy or other foundational skills, helping them to feel supported and understood in their learning journey.

How Group Tutoring Works

Initial Education Screener

Learning Links is committed to ensuring that any tutoring is effective for your child. We understand that all children learn differently and that online group tutoring won’t be suitable for every child. Our initial education screener is an important step in helping to identify what will work best for your family.

The initial screener is a 45-minute mini assessment with a qualified teacher to help identify your child’s learning needs and match them with an appropriate group. This also provides our teachers with an opportunity to observe how your child interacts and copes in an online setting before they commence an online tutoring program.

Following the initial screener, you will receive a written summary of your child’s learning needs, any recommendations for the types of groups your child will benefit from and whether group or one-to-one tutoring is more suited to their needs. This written report is available to share with your child’s class teacher and others in your support network.

An initial screener costs $75 and is a requirement of joining our group tutoring program. However, the cost is deducted from your child’s first session when they commence group tutoring.

Group Placement

To ensure children get the most out of group tutoring, we create groups based on their stage of schooling and learning focus areas. Our learning focus areas include:

  • Reading and spelling (phonics)
  • Writing and language
  • Maths

Grouping children by their stage of schooling ensures our teachers can match their goals to where your child is at in their education journey. School stages we can support in our group tutoring programs include:

  • Stage One: Children in Years 1 and 2 (5-8 years old)*
  • Stage Two: Children in Years 3 and 4 (7-10 years old)
  • Stage Three: Children in Years 5 and 6 (9-12 years old)

If a suitable spot is available in our online group tutoring program, your child will be allocated following their initial education screener. If no suitable spot is available at the time of evaluation, your child will be placed on a waitlist for the topics they need, and you will be contacted as soon as a spot becomes available.

* Group tutoring is not currently available for children in Stage One (Years 1 and 2) but you can join our waitlist for when they are made available in the future.

Continuous Evaluation

Our small group tutoring program is designed to help children master skills so they can catch up and move on to developing new skills. We reassess your child every six months to keep track of their progress and ensure they are still in the best group for their needs. This ongoing assessment is included as part of the program and comes at no additional cost. You will receive a written report with an update from your child’s teacher.

Group Tutoring FAQs

What are the fees for group tutoring?

Group tutoring is charged weekly at $75.00 per 60-minute session. This fee includes:

  • Weekly attendance
  • Regular email updates on your child’s progress
  • Re-assessment every 6 months with a written report

This price is effective from Monday 16 June 2025, and may be subject to change.

What if group tutoring isn't suited to my child?

The initial education screener is designed to evaluate whether a group program is the right fit for your child. If group tutoring is suitable for your child but there are no spots available in an appropriate group, your child will be placed on a waitlist. If group tutoring isn’t suitable for your child’s needs, our qualified teachers will provide recommendations for the best option for your child. This could include enrolling in online or face-to-face individual tutoring or a referral to another service.

How will you know which group is right for my child?

The initial education screener is an important part of group allocation. During the screener, your child will take part in a short assessment that evaluates their reading, comprehension and / or maths skills. The results of this screener show us what level your child is at in these learning areas and helps to determine priorities for tutoring. From here, we can match them in a group with children who are working at a similar level and share the same learning goals.

How is group tutoring different from school?

School and group tutoring are both important aspects of your child’s learning. Classroom teachers do a fantastic job of covering many areas of learning and supporting a much larger group of students daily. Working with an entire classroom can make it difficult for teachers to provide the individualised attention students who are struggling with learning need to keep up. Small group tutoring allows for a more targeted approach to teaching that focuses on a specific area of learning while still providing the social aspect that a classroom offers. Our group tutoring program is capped at just 4 students, of similar ages and needs, it is very different to their larger classroom environment.

What's the difference between individual and group tutoring?

In many ways, individual and group tutoring share similarities. In both programs, children benefit from the expertise of teachers who are specifically trained in supporting children with learning difficulties and resources we have designed with these difficulties in mind. The key difference is that individual tutoring can have a more flexible structure, allowing the opportunity to cover different learning areas, while group tutoring provides a more structured approach, focusing on specific skills. In groups, children also get the benefits of peer learning with 2-3 other children.

What happens if I enrol my child in a group and it's not working?

We’re committed to ensuring tutoring is effective and beneficial for your child. If you have concerns about their engagement or progress, give our team a call and share your concerns with us. We’ll work with you to find the right program to give your child the best chance at building confidence in their learning.

Call 1300 003 900 to discuss your child’s experience with us.

What does my child need to participate in group tutoring?

To participate in group tutoring, your child will need a device with a camera and microphone – we recommend a laptop or desktop computer. They will also need some paper or an exercise book and pencils to complete some activities. If your child needs anything else to feel comfortable such as water or a sensory cushion to sit on, please make sure they have these ready before the session starts. All activities for learning will appear on the screen, with your child responding using their keyboard and mouse during the session.

How will I know if my child is progressing?

We want to make sure our programs are working for your child and keep track of progress in several ways. Your child’s teacher will send regular email updates throughout the program so you can see what your child has been working on. You’ll also be given the opportunity to arrange a 15-minute check-in meeting with their teacher every six months to discuss your child’s specific progress and needs. Every six months we’ll also reassess your child so we can continue to evaluate group suitability. Progress monitoring is included in the group program at no additional cost.

How do I know when my child is finished in the group program?

Group tutoring is an ongoing program with no end date. Your child continues in the group as long as they need the support and the group remains appropriate for their needs. Groups progress together and continue to build on their skills. If your child is progressing at a different rate, we’ll check in to recommend what the next step is for your child.
