Specialist Tutoring

At Learning Links, we know that school can be very challenging for some children, particularly those with learning difficulties and disabilities. Our experienced teachers understand that every child is unique, with their own goals, strengths and challenges.

That’s why we work collaboratively with children, and their families, to identify exactly where the gaps are in their learning. We then tailor an individualised tutoring program to meet their needs and their learning style. This helps each child build the skills, motivation and confidence that they need to reach their potential and succeed at school. Our focus is on literacy and numeracy, but we provide support for a range of learning difficulties.

Our specialist tutoring can help primary and high school children with:

  • Literacy: reading, writing, spelling and comprehension difficulties
  • Numeracy: maths difficulties, working with numbers and worded problems
  • Dyslexia and dyscalculia
  • ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Level 1
  • Learning disabilities and difficulties
  • Study skills and assignment strategies
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Planning, time management and organisation skills

Firstly, we identify where your child begins to find learning difficult and build from that point. Our screening assessment can identify where gaps are in your child’s learning and that is where our program will start.

In our specialist tutoring sessions, our qualified teachers re-teach skills your child is experiencing difficulty with, using clear language, worked examples and a structured approach. We model skills and assist your child for as long as possible to reduce the chance of incorrect learning.

  1. Observation and screening: Students are assessed to identify their strengths and where the gaps are in their understanding.
  2. Set goals: Our teachers set measurable goals, specific to the child’s needs for them to work towards.
  3. Support sessions: Sessions are run during school terms on a weekly basis for 30, 45 or 60 minutes.
  4. Individual Learning Plan: An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is developed to outline how the child will achieve their goals.
  5. Review and post-testing: Students are reviewed to measure progress against their ILP and ensure they are mastering each skill before moving on.

Our aim is to make learning a rewarding experience for children by incorporating a variety of games to provide valuable opportunities for practice.

Revision is usually set each week to consolidate learning and assist your child in mastering literacy and numeracy skills.

Our specialist tutoring program includes pre- and post-testing, to track the progress of children.

With ongoing support, we see average gains of 10-15 months in foundation skills for literacy and numeracy being achieved over an eight-month period of intervention.

This can make an incredible impact in a child’s life. Research shows that without support, children with learning difficulties on average only make a six-month improvement for each year they attend school, while their peers progress a full 12 months.

Learning Links’ team of teachers:

  • Are all tertiary qualified and experienced
  • Have an in-depth understanding of both literacy and numeracy
  • Have a broad range of experience with different learning difficulties and disabilities
