Learning Links Preschool children at cultural excursion

In September, Learning Links Preschool children embarked on an unforgettable journey into Aboriginal culture at Carss Park Bush Flat. Led by the inspiring Gumaraa Rangers, the excursions provided a rich and immersive experience for the children.

The morning began with a traditional smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country from the Rangers, setting the tone for a fun and meaningful day filled with cultural learning and experiences. An engaging presentation followed, where children were taught valuable lessons about the importance of place, caring for Country, and the significance of passing down stories through generations.

Hands-On Learning

Throughout the day, the children participated in a variety of hands-on activities that brought Aboriginal culture to life. These activities included:

  • Bush tucker and medicine: where the children learned about native plants that are used for food and healing.
  • Cultural dance: the children experienced the fun and significance of traditional Aboriginal dances.
  • Artifact exploration: they examined authentic Aboriginal tools and tried their hand at boomerang throwing.
  • Traditional ochre ceremony: taking part in this ceremony helped connect them to ancient practices.

Invaluable Support from Origin Energy

The excursions were made even more special by the incredible support we received from Origin Energy Foundation. Seven Origin Energy volunteers joined the children on the excursions and assisted by guiding them through the activities on the day. This support ensured that each child received individual attention and encouragement which allowed them to fully immerse themselves in the cultural practices. By participating in discussions and activities alongside the Rangers, the volunteers helped the children understand the Aboriginal culture and practices being taught. Their involvement enriched conversations about caring for Country and the importance of storytelling in Aboriginal traditions.

We are deeply grateful for the support of Origin Energy Foundation, who made this experience possible. Their commitment to community involvement and support for educational initiatives not only enhanced the experience for our children but also fostered a sense of pride among the volunteers for the important part they played towards children’s education and cultural learning.

These excursions highlight the importance of early cultural education and the power of experiential learning in fostering understanding and respect for Aboriginal heritage. Thanks to the collaborative efforts between our Learning Links Preschool, Gumaraa Rangers and Origin Energy Foundation, these excursions have created lasting memories and connections that will resonate with all participants, both children and adults, for years to come.
