Working Together
Early childhood intervention is about bringing together the expertise and experiences of many people to help a child learn and develop.
Families have a special knowledge of their child. They love and have dreams for their child and are the decision-makers about what happens and when. Around each family are those who provide practical and emotional support as well as many professionals providing information, guidance and support. There also may be agencies or organisations helping at various stages.
Learning Links' transdisciplinary early childhood intervention team combines the expertise of a range of professionals who share ideas with each other and support and work with a family and their child. These professionals work with families to gather information about a child's strengths and needs. An individualised Family Service Plan establishes the family's goals and forms the basis for intervention.
All Learning Links' staff understand and share responsibility for implementing your child's program.
At different times a family may be involved with one of the following team members:
| • |
Physiotherapist - mostly focused on a child's movement; |
| • |
Speech Pathologist - concerned with eating and drinking skills, communication and social interaction; |
| • |
Occupational Therapist - helps families to develop their child's independence and looks at a child's play, feeding, dressing, toileting and bathing skills as well as hand skills, coordination and posture; |
| • |
Early Special Educator - helps support families and children in the learning process and has expertise in promoting problem solving, social skills,
numeracy, literacy and child development; and |
| • |
Family Counsellor - provides support for the family, accessing support services such as respite care or giving advice on managing challenging behaviour in the home. |
Our service is based on the priorities and needs of each child and family. We work in partnership with your family to provide a co-ordinated early childhood service. We will develop a service agreement with each family that includes services received from Learning Links, other agencies and professionals. (So we can avoid duplication of services, Learning Links will not provide a service that is being provided by another agency.)
