Learning Issues

Learning Links is committed to helping children who have difficulty learning be the best they can be.

Learning Links is all about a boy called Alfred
. Alfred is a happy child and when he was a baby, he loved music and clapping. He attended our Babies Program with his mother Annie when he was six months old and learnt to communicate by using signs. He has grown into a wonderful boy and is now attending school. Alfred has Down Syndrome.

Learning Links is about Amber. Amber was 10 when she attended Learning Links and enjoyed tap and jazz dancing as well as watching TV and videos. Amber is a very happy young girl who shows lots of love. She attended classes at Learning Links to help her reading, spelling and language skills.

Learning Links is also about Francis. Francis was 14 and in High School when this photo was taken. He is the eldest of three boys, enjoys physical sports such as soccer, and loves science. He has a bright positive personality and makes friends easily. Francis started attending classes at Learning Links when he was 8 as he was having difficulty spelling and could not remember words learnt a few days before. He has now graduated from Learning Links and while he is still drawn to science, he has made great gains in literacy.

Learning Links is about a little girl called Nicky. Nicky was three years old when she attended Learning Links' inclusive Preschool. She found out at Preschool that not all children learn and developskills as easily as she does. We hope she has taken that understanding and knowledge of children with special needs she has developed at Learning Links onto school and throughout her life.

Learning Links is all about Ali and Amira.
Ali is a four-year-old boy with two older sisters. His parents immigrated to Australia eight years ago and were married here. Last year Ali’s dad was killed in a car accident, leaving Amira to raise their three children alone and without family support. Ali has very little language and was extremely difficult to manage at home. He would not separate from her at childcare and was so distressed the childcare centre would call Amira to pick him up. Ali’s sisters have also been affected by their dad’s death and are clingy and demanding at home. When Amira came to Learning Links for help she was distressed, exhausted and isolated trying to cope with financial pressures and caring for her children.

Ali was seen by Learning Links’ developmental paediatrician and diagnosed with severe language mild developmental delays. He began attending our Let’s Play group and was referred to our Speech Pathologist for help. Our Family Counsellor with the assistance of an interpreter helped Amira through her grief and distress and identified goals for her future. Respite was arranged to allow Amira to have a break and spend some time with her daughters to help them with their sadness. She has also worked on strategies to deal with Ali’s behaviour and manage her daughters and joined a support group. Ali’s two sisters have attended a siblings program focussing on arts and crafts and Amira plans to attend TAFE this year to improve her English so she can undertake more training as her children get older.

Learning Links is all about Joe, Toula, Dominic and Jane. Toula and Joe were experiencing problems with their two children Jane, 9 and Dominic, 11. Dominic has mild cerebral palsy and while attending a mainstream school often struggled with everyday activities, schoolwork and social relationships. Jane was shy and often refused to get ready in the mornings, regularly complaining about feeling sick. Toula and Joe met with the Family Counsellor from the Family Counselling and Parenting Support Program about the difficulties and explored ways to help their family deal with their stresses.

Jane attended the Cool Kids group for children with anxiety and improved her relationships with her peers. She has since joined the local Guides group and enjoyed learning new skills and making new friends. Dominic has seen Learning Links’ Occupational Therapist and has improved his gross and fine motor skills and most importantly his confidence. Toula and Joe have also attended a Triple P parenting program to further develop their parenting skills.

Learning Links is there to help children like Alfred, Amber, Francis and Nicky. We are also there for hundreds of others just like them.

Learning Links teaches all children that they can learn and most of all, that learning can be fun.
