The Hanen Programs® for Parents

Learning Links offers parents the opportunity to participate in programs developed by The Hanen Centre in Canada and used worldwide to help with new ways of communicating and playing with their children. You can find out more about The Hanen Centre by visiting www.hanen.org.

It Takes Two to Talk - The Hanen Program® for Parents

"The program wasn't teaching Alfred. It was actually teaching us. He's started talking more, more verbalising. He's changed a lot."
Annie, mother of three-year-old Alfred

"The course is enjoyable, educational and gives you the opportunity to have fun while communicating with your child. You are also given the opportunity to meet other parents and discuss so many issues."
Alison, mother of one-year-old Jackson

It Takes Two to Talk - The Hanen Program® for Parents helps children under six years of age by giving parents new ways of communicating and playing with their children. It was developed by The Hanen Centre in Canada and is used worldwide.

The program caters for children with language and developmental delays and recognises both the importance of involving parents and helping children as soon as possible.

The program uses a variety of teaching techniques including individual consultation, video feedback and group sessions to help parents learn how to create and take advantage of everyday opportunities to promote their child's communication and language. It also includes a parent guidebook that follows the program's content.

It Takes Two to Talk - The Hanen Program® for Parents:

includes an initial assessment and goal setting for your child;
consists of eight parent group sessions with eight families;
includes three individual visits so you can practice new techniques learnt from group sessions;
analyses your child's communication by videotaping their interactions with you;
gives parents practical ideas that will help your child develop early communication skills; and
offers an opportunity to meet other parents of children with communication difficulties.

It Takes Two to Talk - The Hanen Program® for Parents is held at a variety of locations depending on group needs. Group Sessions for parents are usually held during the day for 2½ hours. Night sessions are an option.

Individual visits are arranged with each family according to their needs and the program's timetable. Sessions can be held at your home or at Learning Links and usually take one hour.

The fee per program for Learning Links' Members is $300. The course handbook may be borrowed or purchased. Non-members pay 10% more. Member families with a current Family Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card or in difficult financial circumstances may be eligible for a Learning Links fee subsidy when funds are available.

More Than Words - The Hanen Program® for Parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

"The Hanen Program has been easy to follow with its commonsense approach to communicating with Lawrence and developing his communication skills. The video, teaching sessions, feedback and book combine to give an overall picture of how to achieve successful communication, step-by-step."
Rosemary, mother of three-year-old Lawrence

"The program was most beneficial to our family and we are enjoying the benefits of having a happier child who is now trying to communicate more often. All of the program was beneficial in different ways."
Marisa, mother of three-year-old Michael
