Ronald McDonald Learning Program

Helping kids catch up with their education after serious illness

The Ronald McDonald Learning Program is a core program of and is funded by Ronald McDonald House Charities. The program was originally developed and trialed by Learning Links in 1997.

The program supports the educational needs of children recovering from serious illness, by providing individual learning programs.

The educational and professional services needed to deliver this program in NSW and the ACT are provided by Learning Links.

Why is this Program necessary?

More and more children are long term survivors of childhood cancers and serious illness as a result of medical advances.

After a lengthy illness school age children can fall behind in their basic skills such as numeracy and literacy. For these children school can be a frustrating and difficult time. Learning difficulties can cause children to lose confidence. This can result in poor self esteem which has a further negative impact on children's ability to learn.

The Ronald McDonald Learning Program provides educational support so that children who have suffered serious illness may have the same opportunities later in life as their healthier peers.

What educational assistance does the program provide?

A comprehensive range of assessments including psychometric, academic, speech and occupational therapy to identify each child's learning strengths, needs and appropriate intervention.
A unique program delivered by highly skilled professionals, including teachers, psychologists, family counsellors, speech and occupational therapists.
Support to parents and teachers to understand each child's preferred learning style.
A comprehensive written report to parents which can be passed onto the child's school.
One on one tutorials, therapy or small classes depending on each child's identified needs.
Formation and implementation of an individual education plan for each child with ongoing evaluation and review.
Consultation with each child's parents, home school, and other professionals.
