Parenting Workshops
Raising children is challenging at the best of times but for parents of children who have difficulty learning, the job of keeping the family functioning smoothly can be much harder.
Unfortunately, one in every five children has a learning disability, difficulty or developmental delay (Westwood & Graham, 2000). As these children struggle at school, with physical tasks and/or to interact appropriately in social situations, the strain on their family can be high. |
 |
In addition to behavioural problems that often result from their children's frustrations, parents must also cope with the anguish of seeing their child struggle in areas of their daily lives that their peers find easy.
Learning Links would like to run a series of Parenting workshops to give parents new ideas, strategies and, most importantly, the confidence to help themselves and their family through the hard times and general everyday life.
Participants would register for each workshop individually enabling parents/carers to choose the sessions that would best meet their needs.
Session content will include the following topics.
| • |
Building Strong Family Relationships - how to promote positive relationships with children and between children. How parents/carers can look after their own relationship. |
| • |
Early Childhood - socialisation, developing personal autonomy, fears, nightmares, separation adjustment, preschool. |
| • |
Primary Age Children - helping children learn, talking to the teacher, social interaction, homework, difficulties/special needs. |
| • |
Learning Difficulties - what are they? - underlying causes, remedies. |
| • |
Emotional Difficulties - what are they? - underlying causes, remedies. |
| • |
Adolescence - from children to teenagers, self-image, peer group, attitudes to parents, grandparents, risk taking, drugs and alcohol. |
| • |
Families in Conflict – third parties, counselling, mediation, new families. |
| • |
Separated families – family law, lawyers, children's rights, residence and contact issues. |
The workshops will provide opportunities for parents to increase their knowledge and skills in managing their children's behaviours, decreasing the stress in their everyday lives. They will give these families strategies to cope with the hard times these learning delays can bring and help them to enhance their knowledge, skills and confidence in helping their child.
They will also increase the capacity of families to build strong relationships within their families, promoting positive mental health outcomes in both parents and children.
Sessions, held monthly, will be free of charge and open to 20 parents and carers, including members of extended families who often have an integral role in caring for children.
The total workshop series fee is $2,200.00. This includes $300 to help transport families to and from sessions. Any donation towards the fee of these workshops would be appreciated.
