Literacy & Numeracy Program

Can your child read clearly and understand what they have read?
Does your child experience difficulty remembering their times tables?
Is homework a stressful experience for your child?

Learning Links' Literacy & Numeracy Program offers educational classes for children and young people who experience difficulty learning. These classes involve five students with low support needs being taught by a teacher.

During these classes the literacy and/or numeracy needs of individual students are incorporated into learning activities using a variety of multi sensory teaching methods.

Learning in a small group helps students acquire valuable skills while they receive individualised attention. They also have an opportunity to learn important social skills such as turn-taking. Working with other students of similar ability gives each student more opportunity to experience success in an engaging and interactive learning environment.

Each classroom is equipped with a computer and a large variety of interactive software providing an opportunity for students to rehearse skills in a non-judgemental and enjoyable way. Homework will usually be set each week to consolidate learning and assist your child in mastering literacy and numeracy skills.

Meeting the Individual Needs of each Student

Initial assessment of each student's learning abilities helps give our specialist team a thorough understanding of the student's strengths and needs as well as assisting with an appropriate class placement.

An Individual Education Plan documenting learning goals, needs and an action plan to achieve these goals is developed for each student soon after they are enrolled in an Literacy &/or Numeracy Program class.

Classes

Two different types of classes are offered in the Literacy & Numeracy Program .

Two hour classes focus on literacy and numeracy.
One and a half hour classes focus on literacy and numeracy.
One hour classes focus on either literacy or numeracy.

Therapy Support
Classes are supported by our speech and language pathologists and occupational therapists who consult with Learning Links' teachers to provide a multi disciplinary program for students.

Therapists may observe students in their classes, suggest suitable classroom resources and activities and may spend time in the classrooms working with students to enhance language and motor skills.

Assessment and Reports
Assessment and reporting occurs throughout the year. An Individual Education Plan is devised for each student. This identifies the goals to be worked towards and the teaching activities to be implemented. We seek to work in close partnership with schools to maximise outcomes for students.

Consultation with Specialists
Teachers from the Literacy & Numeracy Program are available to discuss their programs and each student's progress. Meetings with our teaching, therapy and family counselling team can also be arranged to ensure families are supported and involved in their children's learning.

Fees

Learning Links charges fees for services to cover the fees of providing specialist help. As a non-profit organisation and charity, our fees for children and families are as low as possible.

To help subsidise fees for children from financially disadvantaged families, we raise funds and apply to a range of organisations and businesses for financial assistance. To access fee subsidies, you must be a member of Learning Links. If your child is enrolled in a Learning Links' program, you can become a Parent Member for $20 (incl GST) per year.
