History of Learning Links
Learning Links was established in 1972 by parents concerned about the lack of appropriate education services to meet their children's needs. The organisation was originally called the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities or ACLD.
Learning Links has a strong history of expanding services to meet the needs of families. In 1994, we were one of the first services to provide an inclusive pre-school program and in 1996, we created a Babies and Early Starters Program to provide services from birth to school entry.
In 1997, we expanded our School Age Services to the Northern Suburbs, and included Occupational and Speech Therapists in our classes for school age children. In 1998 with Ronald McDonald House Charities, we launched an education service for seriously ill children in Sydney and on the South Coast of New South Wales.
In 1999, Learning Links opened its third Sydney branch in Fairfield. 2001 saw another expansion of our services to Miller in south west Sydney - a branch that offers early childhood intervention and family services. This was closely followed in early 2002 by our services for school age children in Sydney's south moving from our Head Office in Peakhurst to a new Southern Suburbs Branch at Penshurst, just five minutes away. In late 2003, Learning Links was offered the chance to provide services to school age children from Sydney's eastern suburbs at the Randwick Literary Institute.
Most recently, Learning Links developed a voluntary reading program called Reading for Life to help primary school children falling behind in their reading. This program is unique in linking trained community volunteers with children to help them in their school environment. This program was developed with the support of our founding partner, Unilever Australia.
During the last 32 years, Learning Links' focus has always been children and their families. Our tireless efforts to expand our services are motivated by only one goal: helping more children in need.
