The Hanen Program - It Takes Two to Talk
The Hanen Program - It Takes Two to Talk helps children learn by focusing on their strengths, their communication style and parents/teachers communication approach. It usually caters for families of children with language delays, developmental delays, Down syndrome or sensory impairments.
The program is an innovative approach to communication, acknowledging that is a two-way process and utilising video feedback of interactions and group sessions. Each program involves eight families over a six-month period and utilises the 3 A approach:

Allow your child to lead
Adapt to share the moment
Add language and experience
Allowing your child to lead discusses observing your child, listening to what they say and waiting for them to respond. These steps may sound simple but are often the most difficult to do when interacting with children with a language delay.
By observing our children, we can notice what they are interested in and follow their lead. By listening we can see what our children say that may have meaning. By waiting for a response (that can mean counting to 10) children can and often do surprise us with something they can say or do.
When we allow our children to lead we get to know them better and learn how best we can help them communicate.
Learning Links has run this program since 1999. Parent feedback has been excellent with the vast majority of parents saying they have changed the way they communicate with their child as a result of the program. All have said that they would recommend this program to parents and friends.
As a result of the success of this program, Learning Links has introduced 'More than Words', a Hanen Program for children with autism spectrum disorders.
Learning Links is a registered Australian charity assisting children who have difficulty learning.
