Reading and Counting for Life

Reading and Counting for Life are volunteer community programs to help children having difficulty reading or understanding numbers at primary school. They are designed to support teachers and give one-to-one assistance to children who are struggling in a classroom environment and are available to schools in Australia and New Zealand.

Reading for Life is ideally suited to businesses, community groups and organisations that would like to give something back to their local community, while at the same time reaping substantial rewards for employees or volunteers.

There are a number of different ways you can become involved.

Volunteers from businesses or the community become reading or number buddies to selected children and visit them at their school to help enhance children's reading or number skills, self-esteem and motivation. Each volunteer works with a child one-to-one for 45 minutes every week for between 10 and 15 weeks.

There is also the option of being a reading buddy to a child from your desk via Reading or Counting for Life Online. The programs use the internet, web cams and instant messaging so a buddy can work with a child anywhere in Australia or New Zealand from their office. Each session is 30 minutes and the program can run from 10 to 15 weeks. Reading for Life Online is being trialled in 2008 and Counting for Life Online is being developed and will be trialled in 2009.

For more information on Reading for Life click here to read a brief summary of the program or go to the program's website www.readingforlife.net.au

Recycle your Printer & Fax Cartridges to Help Kids

Learning Links has joined with Cartridge Collection Co to recycle used Ink Jet and Laser Printer and Fax cartridges.

Recycling these cartridges is an important environmental issue. Millions are dumped as landfill each year and then new cartridges are imported to replace them. Not only will recycling help the environment by reducing landfill, but it will also help our balance of payments because each recycled cartridge means one less imported into Australia.

When cartridges are recycled they are pulled apart in Australia, refilled and then sold back to Australians at a lower price than an imported cartridge.

Cartridge Collection Co will pick up your cartridges for free and pay Learning Links an amount per cartridge to help us help children who have difficulty learning. You can even encourage your employees to bring in their used cartridges from home. Not all cartridge types can be recycled, but if you collect all cartridges, those that can't be recycled will be disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

There is very little for you to do. Cartridge Collection Co will provide you with all the information you need and help you set it up. All you have to do is wrap each cartridge in plastic wrap such as glad wrap or cling wrap or put in a plastic bag. Place the cartridges in a cardboard box and when it is full fax an already prepared form to Cartridge Collection Co and they will do the rest. Cartridge Collection Co will then collect your boxes, sort through the cartridges and send a cheque to Learning Links to help children in need.

It is simple, great for the environment and helps some very special children. We'd love you to come on board and help us care for our environment and our kids - it's a double dose of community spirit. Learning Links would like to publicise the program and if your business is interested in being a part of our program and possibly featured in your local paper, we would love to hear from you.

You can go straight to our registration site at
www.cartridgecollection.com.au to express interest or if you'd like more information contact Wendy Maloney on (02) 8525 8250 to make a double difference!

Snack at Work While you Help Kids Learn

Helping Hand Snack boxes are a wonderful service to businesses, while at the same time helping kids learn. Snack boxes in the office area are great for customers and employees, particularly when your business is located away from shops.

Helping Hand offer a range of snack boxes with a great variety of snack foods including chips, chocolates, cookies, muesli and health bars. They are delivered free to most businesses in the Sydney metropolitan are.

For the children of Learning Links, the snack boxes are especially important. Learning Links relies heavily on donations and income from businesses like Helping Hand Snack Boxes to help children who have difficulty learning and snack food sales have helped subsidise weekly specialist tuition and therapy for many children since its inception five years ago.

Getting a snack box delivered is easy. Simply phone 02 95575741 to arrange for a free delivery.

Cars 4 Kids

If you have fleet cars and would like to reduce your tax bill, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has advised Learning Links that companies have a legitimate way of reducing their tax and helping the community. Best of all, it's already working in another state and is very simple.

Anyone can help by participating in Learning Links' Cars 4 Kids program. By donating one or more of your fleet vehicles with a market value over $5,000 to Learning Links (a charity and deductible gift recipient), you will avoid the hassle and costs of disposal, assist children and families and may be eligible for a tax deduction.

Learning Links receives the sale proceeds as a donation and your company gets the benefit of a tax deduction equivalent to the value of the car – in many cases more than the resale value.  We strongly recommend you check these details with your accountant or the ATO prior to considering this opportunity.

Used Clothing Drive

Learning Links collects used clothing and recycles it to raise money to help children who have difficulty learning and their families. Your company could have a used clothing drive once or twice a year, where staff clean out their old clothing and bring it to work. This would usually be over a week and we would organise a time for our collection truck to pick it up at the end of the week. Alternatively if you have room and premises with a street front, you might be able to have a clothing bin for the public to use on your property.

for more information on Clothing Bins.

Support an Event

We run fundraising events and professional development workshops in different areas of Sydney and these are an ideal opportunity to increase exposure, gain publicity and generate goodwill.

Support a Service or Program

Learning Links offers a range of programs for children from birth to 18 and their families.  You can help by giving equipment or goods, sponsoring a child or family, sponsoring a program or making a general donation.

Go to Projects in Need of Support for a list of some of our programs and projects needing support. If you would like to discuss our full range of programs and services to consider more options, please contact Robyn Collins on (02) 8525 8249 or email

Support a branch

Learning Links has branches in six Sydney locations. Businesses and corporates are invited to consider supporting the children and families receiving specialist support at any one of these locations.

We have a number of successful branch sponsors and staff of our supporters enjoy opportunities to become involved in helping children through things such as email buddies or pen pals, organising and attending parties for the children and running competitions for corporate Christmas Cards designed by the children.

Branch sponsors can donate to a branch to help a variety of projects including covering the cost of specialist services for children and families. We are seeking sponsors for our branches in Fairfield, Brookvale, Randwick, Miller, Penshurst and Peakhurst.  If you are interested in finding out more about branch sponsorship you can contact Robyn Collins on (02) 8525 8249 or email

Staff Fundraising & Community Days

Staff working together to help a charity can have positive effects on staff morale and team building. It might be as simple as organising a mufti or casual clothes day for a donation from staff that may be matched by the company, having a breakfast or morning tea for a donation, becoming an email pen pal to a child learning to read and write, or perhaps organising staff to go to the charity to paint a room or just help out. Your options are only limited by your imagination. There are also volunteering tasks that you could do without leaving your office. These include making resources for our teachers and therapists or photocopying and other administration tasks. Whatever you choose, a community day brings everyone together for a common cause.

Learning Links has a fundraising kit that you can download to help you in your endeavours. Click here to download our Fundraising Kit. (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click here to download reader.)

Learning Links can offer telephone and email support to help you and answer questions. If you would like more information you can contact Robyn Collins by email or telephone (02) 8525 8249 or Wendy Maloney by email or (02) 8525 8250.

In Kind Sponsorship

Some companies produce goods that can be donated or offered at cost price to charities for auctions or used by the charity. Alternatively, others donate their time and expertise in a range of areas such as IT support or marketing. Go to Donations in Kind for some of the items currently needed by Learning Links.

Registered Clubs

Learning Links currently works with a number of registered clubs under State Government legislation to help children in need. Go to Registered Clubs for more information.

Trusts and Foundations

If your company or family has a trust or foundation to manage its giving, Learning Links may fit your criteria to help those in need. We work with a number of Trusts and Foundations to deliver measurable outcomes for children who have difficulty learning.  For more information go to Trusts and Foundations.

Corporate/Charity Christmas Cards

Companies interested in supporting a wonderful cause and sending a Christmas Card featuring a charity to their clients are invited to contact Learning Links.

Children attending our programs enjoy drawing and painting Christmas themes and designs have been featured in the past on corporate cards.  Supporting a charity can have tangible benefits for your business both in terms of staff morale and how your clients perceive your organisation.  Christmas cards featuring a child's design also help you company stand out among a sea of corporate cards.

Another option is for your staff to consider buying their own Christmas Cards from Learning Links' current range.  We can post you our catalogue and staff can choose their own designs and order by telephone or post.

Learning Links would be happy to discuss with you how your company can take advantage of the spirit of giving at Christmas.
