Heping Kids with Acute Needs
Every year, Learning Links helps a significant number of children with multiple disabilities or difficulties and whose families are in such dire financial circumstances they cannot afford to pay at all for specialist help for their children.
Many of these families have more than one child with a diagnosed condition/disability and recently deceased, incarcerated or drug dependent parents or parents with severe illnesses or other significant barriers to employment.

Some of our children have significant chronic illnesses such as spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, severe arthritis and severe asthma that severely impact upon their attendance at school and their subsequent academic performance. Others have significant disabilities or developmental delays. Without help the future prospects for the children in these circumstances are bleak.
This funding will help children in dire financial circumstances who require extensive immediate intervention to overcome or better cope with significant learning difficulties that severely impact upon their ability to learn and develop.
These children's needs are so significant that they would usually attend two or more of our services; for example, specialist literacy and numeracy support, speech therapy, occupational therapy and counselling. Many require services at home.
In almost every case, their family situation is such that they do not have access to transport to get their child to Learning Links. Others may require specialist equipment to enable them to participate. Others may need the services of an interpreter.
To help these children and their families, Learning Links is establishing an Acute Needs Fund. It will allow us to also fund any necessary non-traditional costs that will enable their access, from transport or specialty equipment to interpreting services.
We are aiming to raise $154,100 in 2008 to help 50 children and their
families.
